In this clip from an interview conducted in 2011, Teresa Ish talks about being asked the "What Are You?" question - a common experience for many multicultural / multiracial people.
Teresa Ish was born in Fresno, California and raised near Clovis, California. She is of Chinese-Malaysian and Swedish descent. Ish attended the University of California at Santa Cruz, where she earned a B.A. in environmental studies and biology, and an M.S. in marine science. During her graduate studies, Ish co-founded Fish Wise, a nonprofit organization that promotes seafood sustainability.
"Most people would not even guess that I was half Chinese. It’s really nice for traveling. If I keep my mouth shut, I can kind of fake it almost anywhere. But, you know, obviously once I speak everyone knows I’m American."
